Page security in TurnKey
Security in TurnKey is implemented around several different concepts - users, groups and rights. This section should be read before you start managing users. How to manage users is a seperate part of the user guide.

Users
This is a particular user, or member of your site. a user has a login, password and certain personal details - i.e. first name, last name and email address.

Groups
A group is a particular collection of users. this allows you to set policies or rights against a group of users at once which is quicker than having to manage them individually.

Rights
These are specific actions or levels of access which you can use to specify what a given group can do with a page. the built in rights are view, edit, manage, add, delete.

So, in the case where you want to create a page in the site which is restricted to a particular user group (whether for editing, or just viewing) the following steps will set it up.

  1. If you don't already have a user which will have access to the page you are securing, create the user in the user manager.
  2. Because security is applied against groups, also create a group which will contain the members that will have the access to the page you are configuring. Add whichever members are appropriate to this group. You can do this either by clicking the groups button next to a user you wish to add to the group, or by clicking set members next to the group you wish to add the members to.
  3. Check the default rights against the group. The default rights set against a group limit the rights you can assign for this group to a page. These can be seen by clicking set permissions next to the group within the user manager. Only the rights that are clicked will be available for assigning when you set security against a page, so ensure that the rights you need to set against the page are set here, so they will be selectable when you set permissions on the page.
  4. Now that your user, group and group rights are set up, go back to the item manager and create/locate the page you wish to set permissions against. Click the permissions icon - it is the key icon.

    This will bring up a page with a matrix of all the groups and their rights. As you can see some groups have less rights to select from than the others. This is due to the setting of rights against the group that you did in step 3. You should see your group on the left. Simply click the boxes beneath the rights you want this group to have against this page. If you wanted them to be able to view it, click view. If you want them to be able to edit it, click edit. If you only want this group to view it, uncheck those rights against the members group.

    There is also an option at the bottom to propagate permissions across children. if checked, this will copy these settings you have chosen to all the children of this page. Click 'Continue' to make the desired changes.
  5. Now you can test these changes. Go to the front end of the site, and login as a member of that group. Browse to the page you set the rights against. If the security hasn't seemed to take effect, it may be due to caching. For performance reasons, the policies (rights for groups against pages) are cached in memory. You can come back at a later point to check (note to author: maybe provide a button to clear the cache?).
